Driving the length of the Oregon coast, I was struck by how much the scenery changed from one beach to the next, while still sharing something that made the Pacific Northwest feel unmistakably different. Giant sea stacks rise from the water as if they've appeared out of nowhere, fog settles over the coastline on cool mornings, and stretches of shoreline remain quiet even when people come from miles away to experience them.
People don't come here for warm water or a typical day at the beach. They come for the views, to search the shoreline for something unexpected, to get outside and move, or simply to spend time surrounded by the beauty of the natural world. There's something calming about standing beside an ocean so powerful. The waves crash against the shore in a constant rhythm, then pull back again, creating an ebb and flow that makes it easy to slow down and find a little stillness.
I chose black and white for this photograph to strip away the distractions of color and focus on the coast's defining features: the dark, rugged headlands, the white surf, the rolling fog, and the textures of the shoreline. Without color, the contrast between land, water, and sky becomes more pronounced, allowing the raw beauty of this place to speak for itself.
