Standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon, it's difficult to comprehend just how far the landscape extends. Ridge after ridge stretches toward the horizon, revealing layers of rock shaped over millions of years. The scale is almost impossible to understand until you have the opportunity to stand there and take it all in.
In this photograph, the tiny figures along the overlook provide a sense of scale against the immense canyon beyond them. What might otherwise look like an endless landscape becomes a little easier to understand when you see just how small we are in comparison. The layers of red and muted earth tones reveal the canyon's extraordinary history, with each formation telling part of a story far older than our own.
I was drawn to the contrast between the people and the landscape, and to the way the canyon seems to continue endlessly into the distance. It's a reminder of how much exists beyond our everyday perspective, and how standing somewhere truly immense can change the way we see our place in the world.
